10,000 Apps Now Available on Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace now offers more than 10,000 apps.

The store has been adding apps at an average rate of 1,000 per week since it passed the 5,000 app mark in December. Games remain the most popular type of WP7 app, accounting for 23 percent of the WP7 Marketplace, followed by Tools with 14 percent.

The windows Phone 7 Marketplace hits the 10,000 milestone in just 4.5 months. “Many developers are finding that it is taking less time to build equivalent applications for our phone than the other phones,” says Microsoft senior product manager, Larry Lieberman. It took Apple 4.7 months to get 10,000 apps in the App Store, and it also took the Android Market 11 months.

Now the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace continues to grow at an impressive rate, making it the fastest growing smartphone app store yet. However, in terms of content, App store pioneers Apple and Google remain far ahead of Microsoft. Google’s Android Market currently hosts more than 200,000 apps, while Apple’s App Store offers users more than 300,000 apps.
