Stop Monopoly Of Sugar Immediately

PKR Supreme Council member, Dr Roland Chia Ming Shen questioned the sudden increase of price of sugar to RM2.30. No doubt that the reduction of sugar intake reduces growing incidences of diabetes, obesity and other health hazards.

Nevertheless a sugar price increase will cause the price of everything to increase as well especially in food and beverage especially the daily cup of tea and coffee.

The Rakyat has already bore the brunt of increasing fuel price of RON97 a few days ago, and now the increase of sugar price does not augur well especially with the lower income group especially the kueh sellers and the food hawkers. As a reminder, Sabah has been accorded the second poorest state in Malaysia.

The other irony to this is when Perlis Plantation Berhad under the Kuok Brothers - were controlling the sugar refinery, the goverment keep a tight reign over price increases but once it falls to Felda Global, a wholly subsidiary of Federal GLC ie controlled by BN/UMNO, there was non-stop of price hike.

It was better when Robert Kuok Of Perlis Plantation Berhad owned the sugar monopoly, there was no increase for 10-15 years but under Al Bukhary Of Felda Global, the price of sugar has gone up by RM0.85 cents per kilo in a short period of time.

Dr Roland Chia questioned the rationale behind Felda GlobAL having sole monopoly of importing and exporting sugar for Malaysia, instead there should be a free competition with imports and restricted permits of sugar.

Let the market eventually stabilize the price of sugar, not the government price control mechanisms, it just does not work in the long run. Let there be a liberalization of import of sugar and the price will take care of itself. It is the monopolies that are killing this country which will results in widespread corruption.
