    ReplyDelete

  33. TERIMA KASIH BN! Malaysia Retains No.2 Spot In Asean In Global Competitiveness Report

Malaysia has retained its second spot among Asean countries in the Global Competitiveness Report 2012-2013.

The report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), based in Geneva, Switzerland, ranked the country eighth among 22 Asia Pacific countries ahead of China, India and other Asean countries except Singapore, and placed it among the top 20 per cent of the most competitive countries globally.

The report was presented to the media here today by Malaysia Productivity Corp Senior Director of Global Competitiveness, Lee Saw Hoon.

WEF has acknowledged Malaysia’s efforts to move up the value chain and upgraded the country’s stage of development to “transition towards innovation-driven” from “efficiency-driven” previously.

“This upgrade was accorded as Malaysia’s gross domestic product per capita has increased to US$9,700 from US$8,423 previously,” Lee said.

She said at this new stage of development, more weightage will be put on innovation and sophistication factors in the computation of Malaysia’s competitiveness index.

This means that Malaysia has to increasingly focus on both non-technological and technological innovations to further enhance its competitiveness.

The report said although Malaysia has maintained its score of 5.1, it has dropped four rungs to 25th position out of 144 countries surveyed, from 21st spot out of 142 countries in 2011-2012.

WEF said the country’s most notable advantages are its efficient and competitive market for goods and services, its remarkably supportive financial sector, and its business-friendly institutional framework.

“In a region where many countries suffer from lack of transparency and the presence of red tape, Malaysia stands out as particularly successful at tackling those two issues,” it said, adding much remains to be done to put the country on a more solid growth path.

“Its low level of technology readiness (ranked 51st), is surprising, especially given its achievements in other areas of innovation and business sophistication and the country’s focus on promoting the use of information and communications technology.

“Lack of progress in this area will significantly undermine Malaysia’s effort to become a knowledge-based economy by the end of the decade,” it added.

Meanwhile in a statement today, Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa said the report put Malaysia in the top ten among the 144 countries covered in many areas, including in the legal rights index (ranked first), pay and productivity (third), government services for improved business performance (fourth) and strength of investor protection (fourth).

Malaysia also did well in government regulation and ease of access to loans (eighth); financing through local equity market (ninth); and business impact of rules on foreign direct investments, as well as efficiency of legal framework in challenging regulations (10th).

“Continuous efforts will be undertaken to identify areas for improvement and to implement initiatives to ensure a smooth progression towards an innovation-driven, high-income economy,” Mustapa said.

  36. TAHNIAH BN! Malaysia Ranked 71st In The Economic Freedom Of The World Report

Malaysia is ranked 71st among 144 countries in the Economic Freedom of the World: 2012 Annual Report, released today by the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas).

The report is produced in partnership with Canada’s Fraser Institute and 86 other think tanks globally.

Malaysia made good progress as it vaulted to 71st spot this year from 78th in 2011, Ideas Chief Executive Wan Saiful Wan Jan said in a statement here.

“This is actually a very important report for Malaysia because it measures our performance in the year after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the New Economic Model (NEM) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP),” he added.

The Economic Freedom Index always has a lag of two years due to the delay in global data release.

The report that we are now releasing measures our performance in 2010, Wan Saiful said.

“Our improvement in the ranking shows that the government’s economic agenda has successfully halted our ranking decline for the last few decades.

“I believe the NEM and ETP has produced a positive impact on the level of our economic freedom,” he added.

Wan Saiful hoped the government will remain committed to the liberalisation spirit of the NEM.

He said the government must also avoid the tendency to offer populist handouts and subsidies as the general elections come closer because it has a negative impact on Malaysia’s standing globally.

The report this time also found that a more liberal economic system is positively linked to higher income per capita and economic growth, he said.

“This means that we can possibly improve the life quality of the poorest in Malaysia if we remain committed to further liberalising our economy,” Wan Saiful said.

Hong Kong again topped the rankings of 144 countries. The rankings of other large economies includes United States (18th), Japan (20th), Germany (31st), France (47th), Italy (83rd), Russia (95th), Brazil (105th), China (107th), and India (111th).

  120. Umno needs to undergo a more comprehensive and radical political transformation process in the face of rising challenges over the years, said Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

    ReplyDelete

  121. He said for Umno to become a more dynamic, inclusive, visionary and sacred Malay-Muslim political party, it should be more universal in its struggle without forgetting the objectives of its establishment.

    ReplyDelete

  122. Hence, he said middle class and young Malays whose outlook and thoughts were different from that of the earlier generation, who laid the foundation and shaped Umno's direction, should be reached and engaged.

    ReplyDelete

  123. "The middle class Malays, who are urban dwellers, are the pillar of Umno's new strength. By getting closer to them, the party will get an injection of new spirit and ideas to further strengthen its struggle through the passage of time," he said in a message in conjunction with Umno's 67th anniversary celebration here, tonight.

    ReplyDelete

  124. Muhyiddin said to ensure that the rejuvenation process in Umno would evolve faster, more opportunities should be provided to the younger generation, professionals and middle class Malays to be more active in the party.

    ReplyDelete
  125. He said not only their entry into Umno should be welcomed, they should also be prepared for bigger roles and eventually lead the party in future.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Muhyiddin also stressed the need for Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties to spearhead a larger process of change to ensure they were accepted by all races in the country.

    ReplyDelete

  127. "They need to be more sensitive in building a more cohesive party and strategic cooperation with Umno to ensure that the BN would get stronger support from the people.

    ReplyDelete

  128. As BN director of election, Muhyiddin registered his appreciation to all BN machinery and party supporters, who worked tirelessly to ensure Umno and BN's victory in the just concluded 13th general election (GE13).

    ReplyDelete

  129. He said in GE13, Umno's position became much stronger as it increased the number of parliamentary seats to 79 and state seats to 241 compared to 79 and 238 seats respectively in the 2008 general election, apart from wresting Kedah from the opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Muhyiddin said the next five years before the 14th general election would be crucial for Umno to determine its survival as a sacred Malay party.

    ReplyDelete
  131. "In this short space of time, each level of the Umno leadership at the national, state, divisions and branches have to do self-reflection and take corrective actions to ensure that Umno will continue to uphold its struggle to protect the religion, people and our beloved country," he said.

    ReplyDelete
  132. He also urged Umno members to remain loyal to and support Najib to enable him to lead the country and the party.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, the MP for Putrajaya, holds no cabinet position but is a very powerful man by virtue of being Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno secretary-general. On the run-up to the 13th general election, he shares with HEMANANTHANI SIVANANDAM on how BN would fare and why.

    ReplyDelete

  134. theSun: As BN secretary-general, how confident are you of BN's chances in the upcoming polls?
Adnan: You shouldn't ask what BN's chances are … What you should ask is, would we get two-thirds? As far as we are concerned, we are pushing for two-thirds. We believe we will still be the government.

    ReplyDelete

  135. And the rakyat know and they have chosen a government that has been serving them for the last 55 years.

    ReplyDelete

  136. It is better for them to stick to this government and there is no point in changing. At least, this government with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, as you can see, has brought a lot of reforms and a lot of reforms are done within (the party).

    ReplyDelete

  137. So people realise that he would like to move forward and get things done. Whatever we have done before which needs to be corrected or changed is being done. So why do you want to change in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
  138. But certain quarters feel that this is the time for "change" and question the need to give BN another five-year mandate. What is your take on this?

    ReplyDelete

  139. You can ask people why they want to change; if you look at what had happened in Indonesia forreformasi. Why they wanted it? Is it getting better for Indonesia? Why do they want change in Libya? Is it getting better for them? These are the things instilled by unscrupulous people who want power.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Apart from economy, what do you think are the other problems or core issues people are still dissatisfied with? People are very dissatisfied because there is a lot of perception problem that we are facing and this is also created by the Opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  141. They are playing with the people's mind and they like to (play up issues) that touch the hearts of the people, especially in security and corruption. All these perceptions they put forward and the challenge for us is we have to ensure and explain to the people that corrupt practices will be minimised or eradicated. That is what we are trying to do and on the security situation, we will try to improve.

    ReplyDelete

  142. As I said earlier, we have been the government for the last 55 years. We are not a perfect government but with Najib, we are willing to transform. We would like to change and this transformation is going on. Economic transformation, political transformation… So these are the things we are doing. We need people to assist us also.

    ReplyDelete

  143. The people must understand. We have some people within us (party) also who do not understand what we are trying to do, and when they do not understand, it boils down back to their hearts. If they don't get anything, then there is a problem with Umno. Anything that happens, it is Umno/BN's (fault). You must remember, BN is the only multi-racial party.

    ReplyDelete

  144. This party has been left to us by our forefathers. Do you mean our forefathers in MCA, MIC and Umno were stupid? What Malaysia is today is because of unity in diversity and would you like to destroy that? All of us have problems with whatever race. The Malays, the Chinese, the Indians, all have ethnic problems.

    ReplyDelete

  145. You got Chinese who are (from different clans), Malays you have those who are Javanese, Bugis, for Indians you have Telugu, Malayalee … It's not easy to run this country. People can talk. It is not easy to run this country. We are blessed that our forefathers and whatever religion you are, God has blessed and guided us and we are intact at this present moment because we believe in unity through diversity.

    ReplyDelete

  146. Do you think the support from other (non-Malay) races is back? Do you think component parties are getting back the support from the respective communities? I have got no doubts with other races. I believe all Malaysians who are sensible know that this government for the last 55 years is what that their forefathers have supported …

    ReplyDelete

  147. Even the younger generation that we engage with, when we give explanation, they realise this party is good and they have got to support it. Let them come together with us … If they need us to transform and would like to help us transform.

    ReplyDelete

  148. Of course the Opposition would say not to support BN but to me, I don't believe in that and I believe all the races in Malaysia are sensible. We want to have a situation whereby we have stability, progress. We don't want chaos. We want stability and progress.

    ReplyDelete

  149. Do you think the support is back due to the work of component parties or Datuk Seri Najib himself? The first thing is Datuk Seri Najib. I mean, I can't lie. Secondly, it is also the party president's and the party's transformation. The main thing is Najib because he is sincere. He is trying. To me, I think we should give him a chance; this country will move forward and grow faster.

    ReplyDelete

  150. Do you think the 1Malaysia concept is a success? It has been 1Malaysia all the time but people forget. So that is why Datuk Seri Najib brought back 1Malaysia to remind us that we must be one irrespective of race, ethnicity and religion because Malaysia can only survive because of unity in diversity.

    ReplyDelete

  151. Of course, we add in 1Malaysia "People First" because at this present moment, some of our leaders… Sorry lah… Within Umno, BN, when they become leaders they think for themselves so Datuk Seri Najib wants to tell them that it is the rakyat first, not yourself first. And then we add "Performance Now". Why "performance now"? Because we've been too close with the government officers, maybe they also forgot that the performance must be first, rather than anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Within Umno, you said, some people can cause trouble… How do you plan to tackle this?
There is nothing wrong with Umno, MIC, MCA, all the other component parties. We are all structured parties. We have a structure, our (party) constitution. The only thing is the people in the party, which sometimes destroy the party.

    ReplyDelete

  153. So we have ways because we are democratically elected members, so you can change within the party. I believe people now realise that times have changed. In politics there are two ways. You can be in power by becoming an authoritarian. The other one, which we have chosen, we don't want to become authoritarian but we give people the chance to earn a living. We give a lot of other things in life for you but people want more and more. And in this country, if you look at what the government has been doing for the last 55 years, we subsidise practically everything the rakyat need, yet the rakyat don't realise…

  154. I was quite touched recently when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and I were invited by the Bosnian embassy to attend the Bosnian National Day and there were three speakers. One of them was praising Malaysia and the people of Malaysia for helping Bosnia and accepting them when they were running away from Bosnia, giving them chance to study, earn a living.

    ReplyDelete

  155. They were praising us ... At that time I was a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, I was also involved in helping the Bosnians. When Tun Mahathir spoke, it touched me. He said people from Bosnia know how to thank the Malaysian government and thank the people of Malaysia. He felt sad that the Malaysian people don't even want to thank the Malaysian government.

    ReplyDelete

  156. Speaking of Tun Mahathir, how big of a factor or influence is he for Malaysians? And also what is his impact for BN, especially for Umno? Because some people feel he is retired and he should remain that way.
    Tun Mahathir is a statesman.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Yes, he has retired but you must also remember that for the last 22 years, he helmed Malaysia. Malaysia has become a well-known nation and there is a lot of respect for him, even (among) the younger generation, not just the older people.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Of course, some people are upset with him but we still need some guidance and he is giving us a lot of his thoughts. Of course, he also sometimes correct us when we are a bit astray. We accept him as a statesman and we would like to thank him for what he is doing for us and for the nation because we need leaders like Tun Mahathir, a leader who loves Malaysia. We love Malaysia, we want to be proud of Malaysia and we want Malaysians to be proud.

    ReplyDelete

  159. Do you believe there are certain areas that BN should focus now that it is nearing GE or do you think BN has covered all grounds? I can't tell you that because that is my party secret. Definitely we have certain areas which we are on focus and as I said, even the party is not a perfect party so we need to do a lot of fine-tuning.

    ReplyDelete
  160. We are also advising our leaders at the grassroots levels because all of our component parties are structured parties so (we go to) the lowest level, at the village level. We have instructed what to do and not to do. This is what we are addressing. We are focussing on certain things, yes, but I can't tell you as it's the party's secret.

  171. Najib said Umno, which has been in power continuously for more than six decades, could be considered the world's most successful political party.

    ReplyDelete
  172. He reiterated that Umno is not a racist party but inclusive and moderate.

    ReplyDelete
  173. “We ensure justice for all and regard everyone as our partner. We will defend policies which are fair, equitable and moderate,” he stressed.
