KOTA KINABALU: Former chief minister, Yong Teck Lee, said he is disappointed with the 2012 budget as once again Sabah is being treated as the poor cousin.
He said Sabah is considered the poorest state in Malaysia but Najib’s budget is only pandering to sectors where Barisan Nasional is likely to get votes.
The leader of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said it was clear that the RM232.8 billion budget is solely aimed at pleasing civil servants, teachers, Felda settlers, military and police personnel and the Indian community ahead of snap general elections.
“These are the voting groups that the BN is now trying to improve upon compared to the results of the last general elections in 2008,” he said.
Yong noted that missing from the budget was allocation for the 300MW natural gas-powered electricity generation plant in Lahad Datu to power-up the electricity-starved east coast of the state. The plant was supposed to replace the cancelled coal-fired plant.
Another disappointment for Sabah is the silence on plans to upgrade the Sandakan airport to international standards as promised by the Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman last year.
“The proposed Sandakan airport upgrading is now confirmed to be another empty promise of the BN government,” said Yong adding that in the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015), there was no mention of such plans for Sandakan and Sabahans had expected the 2012 budget to address this.
The business community in the state will also be disappointed that the Prime Minister made no mention of any review of the cabotage policy that has been blamed for the higher prices of goods in Sabah compared to the peninsula.
“The cabotage policy to protect a few shipping companies will continue to plague the manufacturing sector in Sabah.
“The BN continues to ignore Sabah’s key concerns because Sabah is considered a ‘fixed deposit’ for the BN,” said Yong.
Yong also regretted that the new budget has missed out on the urgent need for a comprehensive manpower policy to tackle the over dependence on the two million foreign workers in the country, the wage structure and unemployment.
“The high expectations of the 2012 budget have turned into disappointments for Sabah.” he said .

ReplyDeleteRM500mil to expand the programme to supply clean water to the rural community in Sabah.....
KUALA LUMPUR: With Budget 2012 freshly tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Sarawak and Sabah is set to be the beneficiary of several initiatives for the rakyat.
ReplyDeleteFormulated with the theme ‘National Transformation Policy: Welfare for the Rakyat, Well-Being of the Nation’, among such measures included funding to accelerate the development of the regional corridors including the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).
“In 2012, the government would allocate RM978 million to accelerate the development of five regional corridors,” Najib said during the tabling of Budget 2012 yesterday, with emphasis on the Samalaju water supply in SCORE and the palm oil cluster project in Lahad Datu in the Sabah Development Corridor.
This was on the back of a total of a total allocation of RM232.8 billion in Budget 2012 to implement all government development plans, which included projects under the Rolling Plan 2, National Key Economic Areas, National Key Results Areas, and Strategic Reform Initiatives.
From this amount, RM181.6 billion had been allocated for operating expenditure while RM51.2 billion for development expenditure.
To ease inflation as well as enhance the well-being of the rakyat, Najib stressed on taking both short-term and long-term measures to resolve the issue of rising food prices.
One such initiative was the allocation of RM1.1 billion in 2012 for the development of the agriculture sector, whereby main projects included irrigation projects in Sabah and Sarawak.
In terms of strengthening the development of rural basic infrastructure in a more detailed manner, the government planned to allocate a total of RM2.1 billion to expand clean water supply to 200,000 houses as well as RM1.1 billion for electric supply to 39,000 houses in the rural areas, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak.
“The government is committed to ensure the supply of clean water to the rural community particularly in the interiors of Sabah and Sarawak,” highlighted the Prime Minister.
“However, the implementation of water supply reticulation projects in these areas takes time.
“As an immediate measure, the government has provided an additional 20,000 water tanks costing RM52 million for rainwater harvesting, benefitting 100,000 people living in the interior of Sarawak.
“For 2012, the government will also expand this programme to Sabah with an allocation of RM50 million,” he added.
We won't be able to see the good things if we only have the negative aura...
ReplyDelete"The proposed Sandakan airport upgrading is now confirmed to be another empty promise of the BN government,” said Yong adding that in the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015), there was no mention of such plans for Sandakan and Sabahans had expected the 2012 budget to address this."
"The cabotage policy to protect a few shipping companies will continue to plague the manufacturing sector in Sabah."
The budget is mainly benefits to the government servant, Im sure they are a group of Sabahan gains some token from the budget too. Im sure the government will soon allocate funds for Sabah development projects, lets wait and see.
ReplyDeleteI dont think there are any budget that could please to everyone. Surely some negative feedback and critics. Anyway, the budget 2012 benefit more to the govern servant for sure, Im sure the RM500 would help also to some low income family in Sabah. Hope government will continue their development project in Sabah that could directly benefit the people in Sabah.
ReplyDelete"Another disappointment for Sabah is the silence on plans to upgrade the Sandakan airport to international standards as promised by the Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman last year."
ReplyDeleteWe urge that our CM Musa will do his part to upgrade the Sandakan sirport as promised. Do not disappoint the people of Sabah by giving empty promises.
ReplyDeleteSusah betul mahu kasi puas hati semua orang ni. Kalau pemimpin kerajaan, terpaksalah yes boss saja.
ReplyDelete'Cabotage policy' not beneficial to East Malaysia, hope the federal government can consider other ways to provide balanced benefits to Sabah / Sarawak rather than just to Peninsular
ReplyDeleteSabah BN should stand for the rights of Sabah .. if not people will think that the government is weak
ReplyDeletemaybe Sabahan will switch their votes to the opposition if the government continued to ignore their requests
ReplyDeleteI wish there are lots of goodies for Sabah.
ReplyDeleteEven if we don't get much, we can have more time for improvements.
ReplyDeletewell, the govt can't do everything in a blink of eye, we'll have to be realistic.
ReplyDeleteI really2 hope the private sector will be enjoying pay rise.
ReplyDeleteMemang teda spesifik untuk rakyat Sabah pun.
ReplyDeleteI wish for more allocations to come.

Memang teda spesifik untuk rakyat Sabah pun.
What to do? We aren't Najib to decide.
RM5bill drpd RM232bill utk sabah n sarawak!!!!!!!!!!!! ngam ka amaun ini? klu ikut 20 perkara, sabah control kewangan. klu ikut perlembagaan persekutuan, sabah layak diberikan 2/5 drpd hasil pendapatan keseluruhan sabah. brp pendapatan tahunan sabah? pelancongan berkaitan dgn scuba diving pun dah RM195juta setahun, jumlah keseluruhan pendapatan sektor tourism? petroleum? 1/3 drpd tanaman sawit negara ada di sabah!
ReplyDeletejgn lupa, status sabah @ sarawak bukannya hanya 1 negeri dlm malaysia. ia sepatutnya 1/3 [selepas penyingkiran singapore]. ketahui sejarah anda...
1 lagi wayang kulit BN!!! [mau dekat sudah GE bah].
Terlalu awal rasanya untuk mengatakan bajet 2012 is nothing for Sabah...
