ReplyDeleteCisco Systems Inc says the public sector is one of its key focus areas for 2013 in Malaysia, leveraging on the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) that aims to improve public sector operational efficiency.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteCisco System's Director, Public Sector Programmes (Asean), James Yong, said governments are facing major transitions driven by global political, economic and environmental turbulence.
"As society and citizens become more discerning, their demand on their government and state services will become stronger.
ReplyDelete"The explosion of data through increasing bring your own device (BYOD) adoption and mobility has had a significant impact on consumer behaviour, the information technology sector, service providers and the economy," he said at a media briefing on "Internet of Everything".
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteHe said soon it will also have a strong impact on how the government engages with its civil servants, citizens and the public.
ReplyDeleteYong said Cisco has been helping various Malaysian government agencies, using cost optimisation to drive transformation and gain more value from technology investments.
He said to address these challenges and improve government administration and public sector services, the government needs to establish a connected government ecosystem comprising new business and technology architecture.
ReplyDelete"Internet of everything is a situation where the connection of devices and things through the network will ensure that information can be turned into actions that create new capabilities, richer experiences and unprecedented economic opportunity for businesses, individuals and countries," he added.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteAccording to Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group, there are over 12.5 billion devices connected to the internet, but 99 per cent of 'things' in the world are still not connected to the internet.
ReplyDeleteIt said by 2015, there will be 15 billion devices connected to the internet with the number expected to rise to 50 billion by 2020.
The International Performance Review (IPR) panel has encouraged the cultivation of Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) among civil servants to ensure the achievements and transformation process are made sustainable.
ReplyDeleteThis way, the responsibility could be transferred progressively from the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) to public services.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteThese were among the recommendations submitted by the IPR panels in the 2012 Annual Report of the ETP by Pemandu released today.
ReplyDelete"The Malaysian government should also reduce the complexity of reporting results and focus on the main KPIs (key performance indicators) which illustrate the transformation progress to help the public understand the overall objective and whether they are being met," it said.
One of the panel members, Fairfax Group President Michael Hershman said the ETP being implemented in Malaysia differed from other transformation programmes in the world, particularly in terms of the use of technology across the initiative.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Washington DC-based Carnegie Endowment Senior Associate, Dr Yukon Huang said Malaysia should be very open to encourage foreign direct investment.
"This would help the country develop its twin comparative advantages in commodities -- oil, palm oil, forestry products, natural resources -- and its strength in manufacturing, and potentially in health and financial services," he said.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteThe panel comprised 10 international experts to assess the scope, effort and results of the ETP by providing fair valuation while ensuring that Malaysia would sustain its momentum in the course of its transformation.
Overall, the panel concluded that there was a correlation between the significant increase in private and public investments last year with the ETP, particularly through the work of infrastructure projects such as Mass Rapid Transit (MRT).
ReplyDelete
ReplyDelete"We note that the overall KPI achievement indicates that the momentum of the programme has been sustained," it added.
